The Boeing 377 had its origins in the B-29 Superfortress from which it derived its wings, engines, tail unit, landing gear and lower fuselage. A new upper fuselage with a larger radius created the "double-bubble" effect and enabled the two-deck layout. PanAm became the world's largest operator of Stratocruisers, owning over half the fleet. A number of subsequent variants made this plane the most versatile aircraft of its time with a global reach.
